While it might seem like a lifetime ago, back in January we wrote about Google’s move to de-clutter the first page of search results. And just 8 weeks later, we’ve seen Google make even more substantial
updates that SEO pros should be watching intently.
To quickly recap, the clean-up we discussed two months ago aimed to streamline a searcher’s online experience by de-duplicating search results.
URLs in position zero with a featured snippet would no longer appear anywhere else on search engine results pages (SERPs) as they
had previously. This update was great for u...
Mere weeks into the new year and Google has gifted all of us with a fairly significant update to featured snippets. And if you've followed our
recent advice to add ‘keep a very close eye on Google’ to your list of New Year’s resolutions, then you might already know all about it.
(And if not, no panic - we got you covered).
In under a week, the update has been impactful and, naturally, a hot topic among marketers and business owners everywhere. I’ll discuss some background
info behind this update, what it’s affected so far, and what you should watch out for as you continue t...
Here we are: two weeks into a shiny new decade and - if history proves correct - some of you are already struggling with those infamous New Year’s resolutions.
According to research on this, only 8% of those who make a list of resolutions succeed.
(Yikes!) But no judgement here. We’re all guilty. Sometimes life happens and old habits are tough to break.
The thing that struck me recently is the kind of resolutions most people talk about. We’ve all heard the usual M.O. when it comes to resolutions:
“This year, I will save more money…exercise more...quit smoking...l...
Lately you might have heard or read a lot of marketing chatter about some dude named Bert. And while I would love to regale you with a tale about
a quirky, yet lovable gentleman from the South, I can’t. This particular Bert is actually Google’s BERT - their recently released search
algorithm that appears to have some businesses nervous about their SEO strategies...arguably with good
reason.
Why? Well, the kicker with this algorithm update is that you can’t really optimize for it. (Pausing now for collective gasp). So if your business is currently
executing a content marketi...
It’s been a busy few months in the world of Google+! Launched in 2010, Google+ was the latest attempt of creating a social media platform similar to
Facebook.
Just this past October, Google announced that they would be shutting down Google+ in August 2019 for consumers as a result of lack of broader adoption and critical security issues they
uncovered.
Then in December, Google announced that they would be expediting
the Google+ shut down, bumping it up to March 2019, because the security issues (which Google thought they had patched up) we...
Google says it will "continue to make tweaks"
Google is switching up how it displays ads on desktop searches, removing them from the right-hand side of results and putting them only at the top and
bottom of the page. The change was first reported by The SEM Post with Google later confirming the move. Usually Google's ads are shown all over the page — a mixture of top, bottom, and right-hand positions,
based on the specific query — but this change leaves the sidebar free for Google's Product Listing Ads.
Google says the change is global
But while the right-hand side ad...
Last year, we took a page out of Rand Fishkin's book and crafted a set of digital marketing predictions for 2015.
Well, it's that time of the year again and, like Rand, we're going to grade our previous predictions before we go Nostradamus on the future.
Here's the grading scale we decided on in last year's post:
Oracle (+2) - when we're so right it's like we channeled that nice lady from The Matrix
Oracle In-Training (+1) - we didn't quite see the whole picture, but hey, we still saw the future
Clear As Mud (0) - we weren't right, but we weren't wr...
SEO is defined as the process of driving traffic from the ‘organic’, and ‘paid’ sources to achieve better rankings on search engine result pages (SERPs).
In 2016, SEO will be more important than ever. It helps you drive quality traffic, get visibility, boost your brand and lend your business the credibility
it needs to succeed. SEO provides better ROI than most other forms of online marketing such as PPC advertising, social media marketing, or email marketing.SEO
results come over a period but then they'll stay with a minimum of maintenance.
But as markets are const...
The end of the world is set for April 21, 2015. Hmm, wait a second, that's not the end of the world - it's the day Google will release their much ballyhooed
mobile algorithm update. Considering the way people are reacting to the search giant's news, however, it would seem that the apocalypse is upon us.
While I don’t think the end of days is nigh, here’s what business owners and marketers should know.
What Makes This Update So Different?
There are a few outliers contributing to the pandemonium
(honestly, no pun intended, but now that I realize, it’s hard not to chuckle). Th...

What is DNS
The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical distributed naming system for computers, services, or any resource connected to the Internet or a private network. It translates easily memorized domain names to the numerical IP addresses needed to locate computer services and devices worldwide.
The DNS protocol is serving as the Internet's phone book: every time you visit a website,
your computer performs a DNS lookup. Complex pages often require
multiple DNS lookups before they start loading, so your computer may be
performing hundreds of lookups a day.(More info on DNS in th...

Can Mobile SEO Help my Non-Mobile or Local Business?
Google published recently a study saying that mobile search volume could exceed desktop search volume by the end of 2014. If this might be true for certain
geographical areas (and probably not the ones that are coming now to your mind) and age groups; there's quite a bit more nuance to the trend.
We found Rand's analysis on MOZ Whiteboard Friday very helpful to understand that nuance and how we can level-up our mobile game in ways that will
benefit our local, non-mobile businesses.
Is mobile important to your locan...

the full URL into the address bar on top of their browsers, us...
